1. London's East End 1900s - 1930s
The East End in 1900 - a world of cobbled streets and thick fog. Thousands of
Londoners live in cramped, sooty tenements. Their homes are lit by gas and
infested with lice.
Amidst this dire poverty is a close-knit community defined by resilience,
kindness and humour.
Children play in the streets and the men crowd to the dock gates for work.
From the match factories of Bow to the hop fields of Kent, see how London's
East End lived in the years before the Second World War.

London, 1940: the Luftwaffe is pounding the East End, reducing whole
districts to rubble. People shelter in the Underground as their streets
are destroyed. The East End is stronger than the enemy, and emerges
victorious into a new world.

We Ruled London - The Story Of The Krays
In the 1950s, two men built a criminal empire.
To the public, the Krays were celebrities; to their enemies, they were
dangerous, ruthless men, dishing out violence and even murder.
The Krays operated in the post-war years, where crime meant robbery,
extortion and police corruption. This is the story of that criminal
underworld, and of the rise and fall of the Kray Twins.
From their humble beginnings through to their arrest and imprisonment,
this is the history of the men behind the myth.

London's Lost Docks
The London Docks was the busiest commercial port in the world. The
Thames was packed with ships of all descriptions heading for the docks -
the gateway to the Empire. The quaysides and wharves hummed with activity,
and the clang of metal filled the ship repair yards.
By the 1980s, this world had been swept away and transformed beyond all
recognition.
Using unseen archive film, this is the story of the docks, and of the
people who lived and worked there.

tell the story of London’s railways in fabulous colour, including:
Southern steam at Waterloo (with Nine Elms depot), all the major London
stations, The Blue Pullman and early Diesels, The Golden Arrow and Night

city on earth. A year later, it was the frontline of a desperate struggle
to survive. The coming of war transformed people’s lives; petrol
rationing emptied the streets, lights were blacked out and children were
rushed to the countryside. As pilots duelled in the skies above London,
the city prepared for the gathering storm...

from the map. Water and gas supplies ceased to function, and local

London's War The Beginning Of The End
On 10th May 1941, the Germans launched their deadliest raid of the
Blitz. By the time it was over, the House of Commons lay in ruins and only
Marylebone station was functioning. Cracks began to emerge in the “Blitz
Spirit”, as tighter rationing and defeats abroad caused a loss of
confidence in Churchill’s Government. But in 1942, a major victory at El
Alamein gave the capital a chance to rejoice.
This is the story of London’s War – told by those who were there.

London's War The Road To Victory
By 1944, London was enjoying a period of relative calm, disturbed only
by the occasional air raid. The capital was home to Allied troops
preparing for the invasion of Europe.

terrifying new weapon – the V1. Once again, London was undergoing a
trial by fire, as Nazi missiles pounded the city. The Blitz had returned
in a deadlier form.

Victorian
slums are ripped down as the growing middle class aspire to live in the
ideal homes of suburbia. The old London of market porters and Thames
barges is disappearing in an era of motor cars, luxury, bright lights and
glamour.
